Community Solar Construction Commences in Erath County, TX

Community Solar

Community solar construction has begun for a site in Erath County, TX. The 10-megawatt community solar project is the product of a partnership between TurningPoint Energy, Navisun, and United Cooperative Services and is expected to be completed in February 2021. United Cooperative and TurningPoint have partnered once before on a project in Bosque County, which has seen successful production since it became operational several years ago.

According to TurningPoint president Jared Schoch, the company’s history with Navisun was a big factor in moving forward with the community solar construction. Navisun and TurningPoint have worked together on solar projects for two other developments. As with most community solar projects, TurningPoint hopes to continue to expand the accessibility of solar energy to customers in need of an affordable option to reduce energy costs.

As part of the partnership, independent power producer Navisun will provide financing and be at the forefront of construction and operation. Along with the new Erath Solar project, Navisu was behind an additional 10-megawatt project built in Pittsylvania County, VA, with TurningPoint. Navisun co-founder and managing partner, John Malloy, stated that the company is dedicated to bringing low-cost renewable energy to local communities.

Prior to construction, TurningPoint handled the development of the Erath County project. Upon completion, all energy generated by the facility will be sold to United Cooperative Services under a power purchase agreement. United Cooperative services 14 North Texas counties over a span of 93,000 meters. After the site becomes operational, United will open up the ability to purchase solar energy through United Community Solar, it’s designated community solar program.

Cameron Smallwood, United’s CEO, states that the new facility will directly benefit its customers and provide them with improved access to clean and reliable solar energy. Those who participate in the Erath Solar project will bypass costly solar panels and enjoy the benefits of solar.
