Top 100 company, City Furniture, recently announced its commitment to the community solar. The Florida-based furniture retailer is one of the first of its kind in Florida to subscribe to Florida Power & Light’s SolarTogether community solar program.
City Furniture had previously revealed its plan to become a 100% carbon neutral company by 2040. Linking up with SolarTogether is one step in its process to have its showrooms running off the grid and primarily on solar energy. By joining the SolarTogether community solar program, City Furniture guaranteed that the equivalent of 5% of its annual energy needs would be produced via the renewable resource.
City Furniture’s president, Andrew Koenig, claimed that the company would be able to provide enough electricity to allow three showrooms to come off the grid and run strictly on solar energy.
As of March 2020, Florida’s Public Service Commission approved City Furniture’s subscription to all three portions (industrial, governemtnal, and commercia) of the FPL SolarTogether community solar program. For customers, signing up for the SolarTogether program comes with monthly credits on monthly FPL bills and promotes the expansion of the program to include 20 additional solar plants. Upon completion, those plants will produce upwards of 1,490 megawatts of renewable energy.
Koenig praised the SolarTogether program as a “major innovation” that helped increase the size of the local community solar.
When subscribers take part in the program, they decide how much energy they want to offset through solar creation. Customers sign up for a monthly subscription and pay a fee determined by a fixed rate. In return, they’ll see money coming off of their FPL bill.
Joining the SolarTogether community solar program is just one step City Furniture has taken to go green. It’s “Green Promise” has also included switching its entire fleet of delivery trucks to compressed natural gas and ordering five all-electric Tesla Semi trucks. City Furniture also has eight showrooms that are LEED-certified as “green.” Together, it’s “Green Promise” has eliminated more than 11 million pounds of CO2 production.
City Furniture showrooms can be found throughout Miami as well as southwest and central Florida. Its line of home furnishings includes eco-friendly options, like the Seattle line constructed from 100% reclaimed wood.
